Kumar Purnima – The Festival of the Moon and Unmarried Girls
Kumar Purnima is one of the most beautiful and unique festivals of Odisha. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Odia month of Ashwina and is specially dedicated to unmarried girls. The festival is filled with devotion, traditional games, and the hope of a bright future.
When is Kumar Purnima celebrated?
Kumar Purnima falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Ashwina month, usually in October. It is also known as Sharadiya Purnima. In 2026, this auspicious day will be celebrated according to the traditional Odia Panjika.
Significance of Kumar Purnima: The festival is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (also called Kumar), the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and also to the Moon God (Chandra). Unmarried girls worship the moon and Lord Kartikeya with the wish of getting a good husband and a happy married life. It is believed that sincere prayers offered on this day fulfill the wishes of young girls.
Rituals and Traditions
Girls wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath.
They wear new clothes and adorn themselves with flowers and jewellery.
In the evening, they gather in groups and offer prayers to the rising moon.
Special offerings like Khaja, Pitha, fruits, and sweets are made to the Moon God.
Girls sing traditional songs and play games throughout the day and night.
One of the most popular traditions is playing Puchi and other folk games.
Many girls also observe a fast (upabaasa) and break it after offering prayers to the moon.
Special Food of Kumar Purnima: The most famous food item of this festival is Khaja (a crispy sweet made of refined flour and sugar). Along with Khaja, various types of Pitha, fruits, and other sweets are prepared and shared among family and friends.
Cultural Importance: Kumar Purnima is a festival of joy, hope, and sisterhood. Young girls come together, dress beautifully, sing, dance, and enjoy the moonlit night. କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଅନ୍ୟତମ ସୁନ୍ଦର ଏବଂ ଅନନ୍ୟ ପର୍ବ। ଏହା ଆଶ୍ୱିନ ମାସ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ତିଥିରେ ପାଳିତ ହୁଏ ଏବଂ ବିଶେଷ ଭାବେ ଅବିବାହିତା ଝିଅମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଉତ୍ସର୍ଗୀକୃତ। ଏହି ପର୍ବ ଭକ୍ତି, ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ଖେଳ ଓ ଉଜ୍ଜ୍ୱଳ ଭବିଷ୍ୟତର ଆଶାରେ ଭରପୂର।

କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ଆଶ୍ୱିନ ମାସ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ତିଥିରେ (ସାଧାରଣତଃ ଅକ୍ଟୋବର ମାସରେ) ପଡ଼େ। ଏହାକୁ ଶାରଦୀୟ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ମଧ୍ୟ କୁହାଯାଏ। ୨୦୨୬ ମସିହାରେ ଏହି ଶୁଭ ଦିନ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ପଞ୍ଜିକା ଅନୁସାରେ ପାଳିତ ହେବ।
କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମାର ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱ: ଏହି ପର୍ବ ଭଗବାନ କାର୍ତ୍ତିକେୟ (କୁମାର) ଏବଂ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ଦେବଙ୍କୁ ଉତ୍ସର୍ଗୀକୃତ। ଅବିବାହିତା ଝିଅମାନେ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ଓ କାର୍ତ୍ତିକେୟଙ୍କୁ ପୂଜା କରି ଭଲ ସ୍ୱାମୀ ଓ ସୁଖୀ ବିବାହିତ ଜୀବନର କାମନା କରନ୍ତି। ଏହି ଦିନ ଆନ୍ତରିକ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କଲେ ଝିଅମାନଙ୍କ ମନୋକାମନା ପୂରଣ ହୁଏ ବୋଲି ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରାଯାଏ।
ନୀତି ଓ ପରମ୍ପରା
ଝିଅମାନେ ସକାଳୁ ଉଠି ପବିତ୍ର ସ୍ନାନ କରନ୍ତି।
ସେମାନେ ନୂଆ ଲୁଗା ପିନ୍ଧନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ଫୁଲ ଓ ଗହଣାରେ ସଜ୍ଜିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତି।
ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟାରେ ଦଳବଦ୍ଧ ହୋଇ ଉଦୀୟମାନ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରନ୍ତି।
ଖଜା, ପିଠା, ଫଳ ଓ ମିଠା ଆଦି ଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ଦେବଙ୍କୁ ଅର୍ପଣ କରାଯାଏ।
ଝିଅମାନେ ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ଗୀତ ଗାଆନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ଦିନ-ରାତି ଖେଳ ଖେଳନ୍ତି।
ପୁଚି ଏବଂ ଅନ୍ୟ ଲୋକଖେଳ ଏହି ପର୍ବର ବିଶେଷ ଆକର୍ଷଣ।

କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମାର ବିଶେଷ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ଏହି ପର୍ବର ସବୁଠାରୁ ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ହେଉଛି ଖଜା। ଏଥିସହିତ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ପ୍ରକାରର ପିଠା, ଫଳ ଓ ମିଠା ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ କରାଯାଏ ଏବଂ ପରିବାର ଓ ବନ୍ଧୁମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ବଣ୍ଟାଯାଏ।
ସାଂସ୍କୃତିକ ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱ: କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ଆନନ୍ଦ, ଆଶା ଓ ସହୋଦରୀ ଭାବର ପର୍ବ। ଯୁବତୀ ଝିଅମାନେ ଏକତ୍ରିତ ହୋଇ ସୁନ୍ଦର ପୋଷାକ ପିନ୍ଧନ୍ତି, ଗୀତ ଗାଆନ୍ତି, ନାଚନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରାଲୋକିତ ରାତିକୁ ଉପଭୋଗ କରନ୍ତି। ଏହା ସାମାଜିକ ବନ୍ଧନକୁ ମଜବୁତ କରେ ଏବଂ ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ସଂସ୍କୃତିକୁ ଜୀବନ୍ତ ରଖେ।
ଆଧ୍ୟାତ୍ମିକ ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱ: କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମାରେ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ପୂଜା କଲେ ମାନସିକ ଶାନ୍ତି, ସୌନ୍ଦର୍ଯ୍ୟ ଓ ସକାରାତ୍ମକ ଶକ୍ତି ମିଳେ ବୋଲି ବିଶ୍ୱାସ। ଭଗବାନ କାର୍ତ୍ତିକେୟଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କଲେ ବାଧା ଦୂର ହୁଏ ଏବଂ ଅବିବାହିତା ଝିଅମାନେ ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ଜୀବନସାଥୀ ପାଆନ୍ତି ବୋଲି ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରାଯାଏ।
କିଛି ଆକର୍ଷଣୀୟ ତଥ୍ୟ
କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ମୁଖ୍ୟତଃ ଅବିବାହିତା ଝିଅମାନେ ପାଳନ କରନ୍ତି, କିନ୍ତୁ ସାରା ପରିବାର ଏଥିରେ ଭାଗ ନିଅନ୍ତି।
ଏହି ପର୍ବ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରର ସୌନ୍ଦର୍ଯ୍ୟ ଓ ଶାନ୍ତି ସହିତ ଘନିଷ୍ଠ ଭାବେ ଜଡ଼ିତ।
ଓଡ଼ିଶାର କେତେକ ଅଞ୍ଚଳରେ ଏହା ମା’ ଲକ୍ଷ୍ମୀଙ୍କ ପୂଜା ସହିତ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯୋଡ଼ା।
କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ରାତିକୁ ମନୋକାମନା ପୂରଣର ଅତ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଶୁଭ ସମୟ ବୋଲି ବିବେଚନା କରାଯାଏ।
